ATEX 137
The ATEX 137 Directive has been implemented in the UK by The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres Regulations which came into force on 1 March 1996 under Statutory Instrument 1996 No. 192.
Whilst ATEX 137 will require the use of ATEX approved equipment and protective systems, this 1999/92/EC directive should not be confused with the ATEX 95 Directive 94/9/EC, which itself deals with the equipment and protective systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Further information on ATEX 137 can be found at the website of the European Commission
Often referred to as the "Use" directive, ATEX 137 has been implemented in the UK as part of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
In order to ensure the Safety of Workers where dangerous substances are being used, employers must comply with these new regulations from 1.7.03 for new installations, and from 1.7.06 for existing installations.
